Abstract
Delhi PWD has completed the construction of four flyovers in Delhi using precast concrete segmental construction technology. This has brought about a sea change in the construction technology for the flyovers in the urban environment. In the early nineties of the last century, the construction methodology using closely spaced precast pre-tensioned beams with in-situ deck slab, was brought to Delhi for the purpose of expeditious construction of approach spans of the flyovers. However the need to construct even the central span without disrupting the flow of traffic with the precast technology has remained a dream till Delhi PWD decided to step in. A design competition was floated among the consulting engineers and after a three stage scrutiny of the twenty design entries received, the design using precast segmental construction technology was adopted for four flyovers in Delhi. These four flyovers constructed by Delhi PWD in the heart of Delhi are bound to become a landmark in this historic city. The authors are overwhelmed with the appreciative response, which has been reaching them through letters and word of mouth.
