ITO Flyover at Delhi
Salient Features
The project consists of two clover leaves. Each loop consists of 100m (4x25) of Curved Continuous Pre-stressed Solid Voided Slab with the Radius of 48m followed by embankment with the retaining walls on both the sides. The RCC wall type piers rest on pile foundations. The total length of northern loop is 264m and of southern loop is 249m. There is heavy congestion of the main ITO crossing.
The existing flyover which was Constructed in 1982 is not able to function
effectively as the traffic from widened Vikas Marg could not access it.
As such two elevated clover leaves have been constructed to join the flyovers,
one up loop situated at IG Stadium shall take the traffic coming from Vikas
Marg to Ashram and the down loop situated near the I P Police Station shall
take the traffic coming from Ring Road (Rajghat and ISBT) and going toward
Bahadurshah Zafar Marg, India Gate and Connaught Place. The red lights under
the existing IP Flyover shall be removed after the construction of this project
which will facilitate free flow of traffic coming from Vikas Marg.
Excellence Of The Project
The concept of providing such sharp curved continuous Pre-stressed structure for the elevated Clover Leaf has still been quite rarely used. This involves a complex design and detailing. As such the attempt is quite praise worthy. The construction of this type of structure is also quite complicated and requires the great precision and use of latest technology. The project involved threading of 100m long cables of 12-13 strands in sharp curve requiring very accurate cable fixing and profiling in three directions. The Reinforcement and steel voiders and strands had to be placed in pre planned manner very meticulously in the limited space so that these are in exact position and do not create obstruction to each other. The most challenging part of the construction to achieve perfect lines and finish of the sharply curved structure, so that the structure looks aesthetically beautiful. This has been achieved with great success in the project. The clover leaves project at ITO, Delhi is therefore an excellent and beautiful structure which has completely and successfully met all the challenges of design, construction, performance and quality.
