Abstract
This paper outlines the basic philosophy of seismic design of bridges
and enumerates some of the major shortfalls of Indian codes on the subject. It further
highlights the need for differentiating between buildings and bridges with regard to
earthquake force levels due to the difference in the characteristics of the two types of
structures. The important design features of seismic attachments of superstructure to
pier/abutment caps and the state-of-art techniques of seismic protection of bridges have
been discussed. Finally, design considerations relating to the emerging field of bridge
retrofitting for earthquakes have been given an exposure.
